Identifying Early Phonological
Needs in Children with Hearing Loss Elaine P. Paden, Ph.D and Carolyn J.
Brown, M.S.
This clinical tool for professionals is
designed to assess spontaneous use of first level phonological
patterns in children with hearing loss, utilizing a list
of 25 words that are typically within the speaking vocabulary
of young children with hearing loss. The word list provides
at least five opportunities for the child to demonstrate
how well he/she spontaneously targets each basic consonant
feature, such as manner, place, and voicing, as well as
each of the primary vowel areas, diphthongs, and basic word
patterns. Numerical scoring of the test reveals whether
the child’s patterns are missing, emerging, or mastered.
Results are extremely useful in developing both auditory
and speech goals for the child.
The test kit includes an
instructional manual,
10 score sheets, and 25 picture cards.
Communication Options and
Educational Placements A Guidebook for Parents
As a family raising a child with hearing loss, you will
navigate your way through a variety of challenging decisions.
You may find the two most daunting to be: which mode of
communication is best for my child and our family; and what
is the best educational placement for my child. The varied
and often opposing viewpoints held by professionals, friends
and family members can create anxiety as you strive to make
the right choices for you and your child.
This booklet is designed to present descriptions of the
more common options you will encounter. It was our goal
to present the information in a clear and non-biased format.
We hope that you will find it to be a valuable resource.

The MED-EL Handbook for
Educators and Handling and Troubleshooting the TEMPO+ Speech Processor
The MED-EL Handbook for Educators and
Handling and Troubleshooting the TEMPO+ Speech Processor
are designed to enhance your current teaching practices
as you work with the student who is learning to listen with
a cochlear implant. It will provide an introduction to the
system, and information to help you understand the workings
of the implant, the implant process, what to expect, and
how you can participate as fully as possible in the habilitation
of the child.
Although we refer throughout the guide to “educators,”
this resource is intended for all professionals who provide
services to children with cochlear implants.
