Aspects Of Rehabilitation In Bilaterally Implanted Children Kühn-Inacker, H In April 1998 the first child was bilaterally implanted at the Univ.- ENT-clinic Würzburg. Since this time, more than 50 children following the Rehab-Program of the CICS have had bilateral devices. They are highly different in age of first implantation (8mo – 12; 1 y), age of second implantation (2; y – 14; 1 y) and the time gap between both (2 mo – 4; 9y). Meanwhile there have been some agreements, that bilateral implantation increases the ability to localise and to understand speech in noise (Schön, 2002; Kühn-Inacker & Shehata-Dieler, 2002). Also some personal impressions have shown, that the hearing on both sides is easier and doesn’t need so much concentration. The presentation will emphasize the question how the rehabilitation has to work on bilateral training: Some observations depending (1) on the age of implantation and the time gap between will be drawn out, (2) some ideas for indication and the intensity of bilateral training will be given with regards to the main steps of hearing and language development.
