With 15 years of experience as a pediatric audiologist
with a focus on cochlear implants, Darla is MED-EL’s Director, Education and Corporate Communications. In this position, Darla leads a team
of educational and rehabilitative professionals who provide
outreach services. She also runs internal staff training as
well as cochlear implant programming courses for clinic audiologists.
Darla began her career as a staff audiologist
for the Colorado Ear Clinic and Otologic Research Center. After
a brief time as a school audiologist, she became the head audiologist
and cochlear implant coordinator at Presbyterian Ear Institute
in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While there, she was involved in
starting and providing audiology services to a private non-profit
alternative school for children with hearing loss. After several
years in Albuquerque, she returned to Colorado as the Pediatric
Cochlear Implant Coordinator for Denver Ear Institute. Darla
joined MED-EL Corporation in 1997 when the company began clinical
trials.
Truly passionate about the industry, Darla has
served on a variety of boards, including the Executive Board
of the New Mexico Speech and Hearing Association, the Colorado
Cochlear Implant Consortium, the American Board of Audiology
Cochlear Implant Specialty Certification Committee, the Infant
Cochlear Implant Steering Committee, and the Colorado Hearing-Impaired
Family Support Network Advisory Board. She has also served as
Adjunct Faculty for the University of New Mexico and has been
a peer reviewer for New Mexico Medicaid Utilization and Review.
She has published several articles on cochlear
implant research, co-edited a book on educational alternatives
for children with cochlear implants, and has lectured extensively
on cochlear implant technology and outcomes.
Darla received her Bachelor of Science degree
in communication disorders from the University of Wyoming. She
received her Master of Arts in audiology from the University
of Northern Colorado.
