OPUS 1 and 2 Speech Processors Now Available in Canada
Two Options Incorporate Cutting-Edge Technological Advances

Durham, NC -- MED-EL Corporation announced today Health Canada’s approval of two new options in cochlear implant speech processors.  Now available, OPUS 1 and OPUS 2 speech processors feature the latest high-performance microchip technology, developed to offer greater sound detail and clarity, with exceptional features incorporated for ease of use.

“For the first time, cochlear implant users have access to speech coding strategies designed to convey the “fine structure” of sounds, the detailed pitch and timing cues that are particularly important when listening to music or having conversations in noisy environments,” said Kim Jackson, Vice President of Clinical and Sales for North America.

The OPUS 1 uses the design of the widely-used TEMPO+, making it ideal for people who prefer a design that incorporates program, volume and sensitivity switches directly on the processor.

The OPUS 2 features a new ergonomic, anatomically friendly shape with a switch-free design. Changes to OPUS 2 settings are made “on the go” with the external credit-card sized FineTuner, without removing the processor from the ear and without interrupting the user’s hearing. This ensures that infants and small children do not inadvertently change settings when they touch the processor. The large buttons on the FineTuner also make it very comfortable, especially for people who have difficulties seeing or using small controls.

The OPUS 2 also provides convenient access to external devices. It supports wireless direct-link devices, such as FM and Bluetooth systems, and includes an integrated state-of-the-art telecoil and standard hearing aid input jack.  The slim profile and lightweight design of the processors ensure a comfortable and secure fit. With a modular system of interchangeable wearing options, both OPUS processors can be customized to meet individual needs. In addition, the OPUS 2 features an optional private alert, which provides an auditory notification to the listener when the batteries are nearly drained, or when a command is sent to the processor from the FineTuner. Both processors feature wearing options that include special solutions for infants and toddlers, as well as practical options for active teens.  OPUS 1 and OPUS 2 are available in six colors.
