MED-EL cochlear implants are made according to the highest safety standards for long-term reliability, durability and performance. We use only the highest quality materials and strictest testing procedures. We publish our data so it is honest, straight-forward and easy to access. We recognize that when you choose a cochlear implant, you are making a lifetime commitment to hearing. We want you to be able to make a well-informed choice for a system and a company that will be there for you throughout your new hearing journey!
We evaluate reliability using a special statistic called the Cumulative Survival Rating (CSR). The CSR statistic is the same one used to evaluate pacemaker reliability, and MED-EL follows the reporting procedure governed by the latest international (ISO) standard. The CSR reporting method allows you to visualize how reliable our devices are over time. For example, you can easily determine just by looking at a chart how many devices are still functioning after a specified number of months or years of use. The interactive reliability data on our website allow you to view the most up-to-date information at any time.
Additionally, MED-EL has taken the industry lead in reporting reliability of our speech processors. At the time of printing, we are the only implant manufacturer to provide open and clear information on this topic on our website. Speech processor malfunctions are less devastating than an internal device failure, but can significantly impact your day-to-day life. These are important considerations during the implant candidacy process.
